Ffos Las opened in 2009 and was the first new racecourse to be built in the UK for 80 years, bringing quality horseracing back to the west of Wales. HRH The Prince of Wales visited the racecourse in 2011 for a raceday organised to raise money for The Prince’s Charities in Wales.
The racecourse is nestled between the towns of Llanelli and Carmarthern, just 15 minutes from Jct 48 of the M4 and a 60 minute drive from the Irish ferry terminals of Pembroke Dock and Fishguard.
The magnificent setting, surrounded by rolling countryside and with views down the Gwendraeth Valley to Carmarthen Bay, makes it difficult to imagine the site in its original form as one of the largest open cast coalmines in Europe. The ambitious redevelopment project was spearheaded by racehorse owner and chairman of civil engineering company The Walters Group, Dai Walters.
The dual track provides a racing surface to rival any course in the world. It is 60m wide, has the benefit of miles of drainage and has been created level to provide a superb track to race on and a great viewing track for the race-goer.
The highlight of the racing calendar at Ffos Las is The William Hill Welsh Champion Hurdle, held in February.
