MICHAEL HOWARD has become a Non-Executive Director of Northern Racing Limited, the private company that owns nine British racecourses. The former Home Secretary and Conservative Party leader is a keen follower of the sport of horse racing. Tony Kelly, Group Managing Director of Northern Racing, said: "I very much welcome Michael Howard's appointment to our board as a Non-Executive Director. "As well as being most knowledgeable and enthusiastic about our sport, he brings a wealth of experience across the widest spectrum which will be invaluable to us." Appointed a QC in 1982, Michael Howard was first elected as an MP a year later - for the constituency of Folkestone and Hythe - becoming a Cabinet member in 1990 and subsequently Home Secretary. He led the Conservative Party in opposition between 2003 and 2005. He has previously announced that he is standing down from Parliament at the next General Election. Michael Howard said: "I am delighted to have been offered this opportunity to contribute not only to a sport that I follow closely but also to the continued success of one of Britain's largest and innovative racecourse groups." *In April 2007, the Reuben Brothers acquired Northern Racing PLC, the publicly listed racecourse company, in a deal worth £90 million. Northern Racing Limited owns nine racecourses - Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Newcastle, Sedgefield and Uttoxeter - and accounts for approximately 14% of all fixtures run in England, Scotland and Wales.
