NORTHERN Racing has been appointed by Ffos Las Ltd to manage Ffos Las Racecourse which will become Britain's 61st racecourse in the summer of 2009 and the first turf racecourse to be opened in more than 80 years. Ffos Las lies between the villages of Trimsaran and Carway in Carmarthenshire. The racecourse, which will be one and a half miles round, will be used for both National Hunt and Flat racing and is due to stage eight fixtures in the second half of 2009 and 16 fixtures in 2010. Tony Kelly, Group Managing Director of Northern Racing, said: "We are delighted to have been appointed to partner the Walters Group and manage the racecourse. "We officially take over the management role on 1 September, and look forward to working closely with the racecourse's owners up to the scheduled opening date in the summer of 2009 and thereafter to create a successful enterprise. Our remit covers all aspects of managing the racing product, the commercial activities and the non-raceday events. "There is a very clear brief on the type and quality of racing that will be staged at the track. There are a large number of trainers in that part of the world and coupled with the likely runners coming over from Ireland we aim to attract good quality competitive fields." Northern Racing already owns nine racecourses, including Chepstow Racecourse in south east Wales. The company is chaired by Michael Howard MP who is originally from Llanelli. Dave Walters, Chairman of Ffos Las Racecourse and Walters Group, and a man with a passion for the sport, said: "We have built a tremendous facility at Ffos Las and we are delighted that Northern Racing are going to work with us as our operating partner to develop the facility to its full potential. "Construction work is ahead of programme and we look forward to opening next year and welcoming the racing world into this unique facility which we are all tremendously proud to have delivered to this most beautiful part of Wales."
